Millions of people across the United States wear braces. The majority of those people are under the age of 18. We’re starting to see those usage patterns shift though.

An increasing amount of adults are finding themselves interested in orthodontic care, perhaps because they couldn’t afford care in their youth or because they need corrective care due to poor post-orthodontic maintenance.

Whatever the reason may be, a substantial number of people over the age of 18 are choosing to relegate their care to Invisalign.

So, is Invisalign worth it?

That’s a question that many of our patients at Koerich & Case Orthodontics ask themselves and one we hope to answer in an informative, non-partisan way below! If you’re curious to know if Invisalign could be something that would make sense for you, keep reading to learn more.

Invisalign Benefits

In our experience, the benefits of Invisalign have outweighed any unique drawbacks this teeth-straightening technology poses. With that in mind, we’ll open up our ‘is Invisalign worth it’ exploration by sharing the pros you can enjoy by forgoing traditional braces in favor of this newer mode of orthodontics.

Here are a few things you can expect to enjoy:

Fixing Your Smile Discreetly

One of the primary concerns all patients have with orthodontic devices is the visual impact they’ll have. This issue is amplified for people over the age of 18 because most adults are not sporting braces.

The great thing about Invisalign is that it straightens teeth via clear, nearly invisible trays (hence the name). That allows people of all ages the ability to get their smile to where they want it without the drawback of needing to advertise the process to friends, family, and co-workers.

Eating and Drinking Flexibility

Another pain point for traditional braces users is the complications that brackets and wires can present while eating. Wires are experts at getting food stuck in them and brackets can become stained depending on their color and your diet.

While you’ll want to do so sparingly, Invisalign allows users the ability to remove trays from their teeth when they’re eating. That means no stuck food!

Simply pop off your device, eat, brush, and put your straightening tray back in.

Surprisingly Quick Turnarounds

We’re hesitant to state a specific number when it comes to treatment turnaround time with Invisalign. What we will say is that most people are surprised by how quickly they’re able to finish their treatment, assuming they manage their wearing responsibilities well.

Simple teeth-straightening cases can be resolved in a few months with Invisalign. More complicated cases can take years, although, an average range to keep in mind would be 12 to 18 months.

Increasing Flexibility in Issues Treated

It’s no secret that Invisalign isn’t the best option to deal with severe dental cases (major tooth rotations, deeply crowded teeth, etc.). What we are happy to report though is that the successful use cases we’ve seen with Invisalign continue to expand and impress as more people with a wide array of needs try and enjoy this straightening technology.

The only way we can know for sure if Invisalign might be best for you is if we can offer you an individual consult. If that’s of interest, contact us today!

Invisalign Drawbacks

It’s not possible to formulate an “is it worth it” conclusion without understanding the drawbacks of whatever it is that you’re weighing. While we’re happy to report that Invisalign doesn’t have many drawbacks, it’s certainly not without its faults.

Here are a few of them we think may be relevant to you:

Invisalign Is More Expensive Than Traditional Braces

As you may have suspected, Invisalign treatment will generally run you more money than an equivalent treatment executed with more classic technologies. Granted, many are surprised by just how affordable Invisalign can be.

We’d caution against sticker shock before discussing pricing and financing options with our team.

Insurance Compatibility Can Be a Problem

Most insurers do offer subsidies for orthodontic work. Most of those subsidies, however, are directed towards traditional modes of treatment.

Policies vary from provider to provider and from plan to plan so talk to your insurer for more information.

Invisalign Requires Discipline

For Invisalign to work, it’s recommended that users keep their straightening trays on for at least 22 hours per day. While most users have no problem doing this, some find themselves tempted by Invisalign’s removable feature and keep their devices off more than they should.

Not following through on your responsibility as a wearer will inflate the amount of time you’re having to work through your treatment and may adversely affect cost.

Severe Orthodontic Cases May Need Other Forms of Help

As we mentioned, Invisalign, while versatile, is not a one-stop fix for everyone. Those that have more severe orthodontic problems may need to lean on traditional methodologies. That is, at least, to begin their treatment.
