What to Consider When Choosing an Orthodontist in South Charlotte

What to Consider When Choosing an Orthodontist in South Charlotte

You’re never too old to visit an orthodontist! In fact, about 20% of the people who currently have braces are adults. Whether you need an orthodontist for yourself or your kids, it helps to vet your options.

Here are six tips that can help you find the best orthodontist in South Charlotte. With these tips, you’ll have peace of mind in your choice. You can choose a qualified, experienced orthodontist with your family’s needs in mind.

An experienced orthodontist can improve the appearance of your entire family’s smile with ease.

Start your search (and save yourself time in the process). Find the best orthodontist with these tips today!

1. Check Their Credentials

First, Google “orthodontists near me” and make a list of professionals in the area. You’ll use the rest of these tips to narrow down your options for orthodontists.

There are over 367,000 orthodontists in the US. One of the fastest ways to narrow down your options is to check each professional’s credentials.

You can head online to make sure each orthodontist’s credentials are up-to-date. If they’re not, scratch that orthodontist off your list.

If they don’t have the proper credentials, they might struggle to meet high standards of care.

Learn more about their education, too. When did they graduate? Make sure it was from an accredited institution.

If they graduated a few decades ago, look for an orthodontist who cares about continuing their education. Someone who prioritizes continuing their education will remain up-to-date with new technologies.

They’ll likely offer newer orthodontic services as a result.

You can also start your search for an orthodontist in South Charlotte by speaking with people you trust. Talk with friends and family members in the area. If you know someone who recently completed orthodontic treatment, talk to them first.

Look for someone who completed the treatment you’re interested in. For example, if you’re curious about Invisalign, talk with a friend who completed their Invisalign treatment. Then, ask about their experience with the orthodontist.

Speaking with people you know and trust can help you learn from their first-hand accounts.

For example, you can ask if the orthodontist was professional and knowledgeable. Did your friend achieve their goals? Were they satisfied with the services they received?

If not, you’ll know to scratch that orthodontist off your list.

2. Look for Years of Experience

Before choosing an orthodontist in South Charlotte, consider how long each orthodontist has practiced. Look for someone with years of hands-on experience. An orthodontist with an established practice has likely earned the respect of the local community.

Chances are they’ve outlasted competing practices in the area, too.

You’ll have peace of mind choosing an established business. They won’t close down overnight. They’ve likely worked out the kinks in their daily operations, too.

Once you find an experienced orthodontist, consider their specialty. For example, you might find someone who has offered braces as a treatment for 20 years. Maybe they’ve only started offering Invisalign as a service.

Choose someone with years of experience offering the services you need. Otherwise, they might struggle to accomplish your treatment goals.

3. Review Their Services

As you review your options for orthodontists, consider the different services they offer. Remember, it’s important to find someone who can accomplish your treatment goals.

Different types of orthodontic treatment might include braces and Invisalign. Your orthodontist might offer clear braces or retainers to straighten your teeth, too.

If you’re not sure which services you need, schedule a consultation appointment. Your orthodontist can assess your teeth and determine the best course of treatment.

Make sure the orthodontist follows new techniques and offers the latest appliances. These techniques can:

  • Reduce treatment time
  • Reduce the frequency of your visits
  • Minimize discomfort during the course of treatment

During your consultation appointment, review your options with the orthodontist. Make sure to develop realistic expectations about each option.

4. Consult a Map

Head online and search “orthodontists near me” again. Then, pull up Google Maps.

Consider how far each orthodontist’s practice is from your work or home. If your kids need treatment, consider the distance between each practice and their school.

Don’t choose a practice that’s over 30 minutes away. Otherwise, you might struggle to make it to your appointments.

Ask each practice about their hours, too.

5. Consider the Environment

During your consultation appointment, take a look around. Is the office clean and organized? Is the waiting room filled with patients?

Don’t choose a practice that tends to overbook patients. You might have to wait a while before your appointment.

Make sure the treatment rooms are clean and organized as well.

6. Ask Questions

Have a list of questions you want to ask during your consultation appointment ready beforehand. For example, you might want to ask:

  • Which accredited dental school did you graduate from
  • Where did you complete your orthodontic residency program
  • Which orthodontic treatments do you offer
  • What treatment do you think I need
  • Do you also offer general dentistry services
  • Do you follow a specific standard of care
  • What is your process when developing treatment plans
  • What are the possible consequences if I delay treatment

Make sure to ask questions about your unique needs, too. Your orthodontist can complete an oral exam of your teeth. Then, they can review which services will best improve your orthodontic health.

Ask the orthodontist for proof of their credentials, too. For example, you can ask if they’re board-certified by the American Board of Orthodontics. Ask if they’re a member of the American Association of Orthodontists as well.

New Year, New Dental Benefits

New Year, New Dental Benefits

A new year always brings new opportunities. The start of a new year also brings new dental benefits! Once January rolls around again, your dental benefits renew and you can add improving your dental health to your list of New Year’s resolutions. There are many perks of using your dental benefits, which all revolve around a happy, healthier smile in 2019.

Preventative Care

The benefit of most dental insurance plans is that preventative care like routine cleanings, oral exams, X-rays, fluoride treatments and sealants, are covered without needing to meet a deductible. This is good news if you are wanting to make your pearly-whites a priority in the new year. Preventative care will ensure that you are taking the necessary steps for a healthy smile so you can avoid more costly work if a dental or orthodontic problem were to persist. During these types of appointments, your dentist will also be able to refer you to your nearby orthodontist if they feel like orthodontic work would be the best option for you.

Basic Procedures

Perhaps in the New Year you find yourself needing a filling for a cavity, or maybe a tooth is causing you discomfort and you need an extraction. This type of work is classified as a basic procedure and most insurance policies will cover 70 to 80 percent after meeting your deductible. Coinsurance and copays will also help determine what you pay out of pocket. Additionally, if you require a root canal or treatment for issues like gum disease, your insurance will help you pay for it. If you have a deductible to meet, visiting the dentist for more basic procedures will help you reach that deductible so your insurance can pay any major procedures you may have.

Orthodontic Treatment

To receive coverage for orthodontic treatment like braces, InvisalignⓇ and other corrective solutions, most dental insurance plans or health insurance plans will allow you to add on insurance to cover these costs and make corrective procedures more affordable for you and your family. If you are considering braces for your child or even yourself, talk to your orthodontist in Charlotte, NC about different insurance options and what they recommend to work best for your life and goals.

At Case Orthodontics, we accept many different kinds of dental insurance to help you achieve a healthier smile in 2019. Regardless of what your need is, whether it be Phase 1 orthodontic treatment or Invisalign, talk to our team about your dental insurance options and what dental benefits your plan can give you in 2019. Put your best smile forward!
